Roman Lamp with Chariot Race, 1st Half 1st Century AD

The discus shows a charioteer energetically whipping up a four-horse chariot to the left. The man has the reins bound around his chest.

Mold-made lamp with an angular nozzle flanked by volutes. Löschke type 1 B. The inward-sloping rim interrupted by a channel. Loeschcke form 2A.

Single filling hole near the horses' legs. The flat bottom with a raised base ring. Covered with a dull brown slip.

L. 10.5 cm (4.1 in), W. 7.3 cm (2.9 in)

Complete. The brown slip that covers the piece peeled off in places. Soil deposits root marks.

Ex Swiss private collection Peter-Adank (1940-1991), acquired between 1957 and 1968 during his journeys in the Middle East. Thence by descent. Collection entries joined.
