Roman Lamp with Gladiators, 1st Half 1st Century AD

The discus decorated with two gladiators of the hoplomachus type.

Both wear plumed helmets, loincloths and greaves. The defeated gladiator kneels on the right, while the victor on the left lifts up his round shield.

Single filling hole between the gladiators. The base marked off by a circular groove. Surface covered with orange-brown glaze.

Superb preservation of the discus. Snout reattached. Slip on the outside with minor wear.

Ex Swiss private collection Peter-Adank (1940-1991), acquired between 1957 and 1968 during his journeys in the Middle East. Thence by descent. Collection entries joined.
