Greek Campanian Bowl, around 300 BC

Glazed Campanian bowl with the impressed head of the Medusa surrounded by eight heavy palmettes. The palmettes show five petals on a broad volute base and are linked by arcs.

For a similar arrangement of the stamped decoration cf. Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA) Capua 3, plate 28, depiction no. 5.

The bowl shows a wide shallow floor curving up gently towards the edge. The thick narrow rim is rounded on top. Imprint from the foot of another dish on the floor.

Standing on a low conical foot. Traces of fingertips around the foot when dipped into the glaze.

D. 15.8 cm (6.2 in)

Intact and fine with minor wear. The glaze has turned into a warm red-brown color.
