North Daunian Kyathos with Head, Subgeometric II, 550-400 BC

Intriguing Daunian kyathos featuring an incurving shallow bowl and a handle that widens towards the top to form stylized horns, a tiny animal head inserted in between.

The cream-hued surface shows a delicate linear decoration, both on the handle and on the outside of the bowl.

For a kyathos from the same workshop, cf. vase no 202 in: Electa Napoli. L'Art des Peoples Italiques. Geneva 1993.

Excellent quality and condition. Handle reattached, ear and snouth of the animal head restored. Applied decoration on the bowl worn in places.

H. to handle 10.7 cm (4.2 in)
D. 13.5 cm (5.3 in)

Swiss private collection, acquired in the German art market in 2010.
