Incunable from the Biblia Latina, Book of Isaiah, around 1270, Northern France

First leaf from the Book of Jesaia with the initial V featuring the prophet. Two handwritten columns with 45 lines in small textura, ornamental design between them. On the reverse the decorative letter N in the finest Gothic book illumination.

Black and red ink. Inscribed on both sides. From a North French monastery writing room.

Isaiah was a Judaean prophet from the 8th century BC who proclaimed an eschatological vision for both Israel and the approaching kingdom of Assyria.

Latin manuscript on vellum.

Northern France, around 1270 AD

12.4 x 8.3 cm (text area), 18.5 x 12 cm (passepartout), 35 x 26 cm (frame)

Vellum slightly wavy in places. Old handwritten annotation on top mentioning Judaea and Gomorrah.
