Double-page with woodcuts from
Hartmann Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle.
The principal woodcut refers to the 5th Council of Constantinople, held 879/880
AD. It depicts the pope and a large group of clergy under the blessing of the
Holy Spirit, who is shown as a dove.
Departing from 874 AD, the Latin text develops the context of the 5th Council of
Constantinople, an initiative of Pope Johannes VIII to appease the Byzantines
and obtain their aid against the Saracen incursions into Italy.
The other pages with vignettes of contemporary kings, popes and saints. One
vignette referring to 'blood rain' that fell during the reign of Ludovicus II
and scared the people of the time.
'Blood rain' is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in Europe when reddish
dust from the Sahara Dessert precipitates with rain.
Beautiful late Gothic style.
