Apulian Peucetian Kantharos, 350-300 BC

Large tan colored kantharos decorated with ivy tendrils ending in corymbs. A checkerboard band with circular incisions underneath.

Bands of brownish glaze at the rim, the rounded bowl and the flared foot. The vertical strap handles with lines and stars on the outside.

The tapering wall offset from the shallow rounded bowl, set on a high flared foot.

The kantharos is very rare in the Italic pottery tradition and certainly influenced by Greek workshops. For the attribution of the kantharos, cf. vase no. 56 in: K. Stähler et al. Kunstwerke der Antike, eine Dortmunder Sammlung. Dortmund 1988.
