Gandhara Stucco Head of a Bodhissatva, 3rd/4th Century AD

Asymmetrically modeled head with protruding left side and falling line of the eyes and of the mouth making the head appear to be bent to the right.

Yellow-ochre incarnate, black eyebrows and faint red pigment on the swollen eyelids which close the eyes to slits. Sensitively modeled fleshy mouth.

The oval face is framed by wavy curls tightened below the unisa on top. The pierced elongated earlobes appear from below the hairdo.

Very expressive fragment with losses to the nose and minor abrasion to the highpoints. Well preserved original polychromy. Unisa partially worn.

H. 6.5 cm (2.55 in)
H. with stand 13.3 cm (5.2 in)

Private Pennsylvania collection, acquired in the early 1980s.
